I'm in Spain, walking along a well-lit road. I have no idea how I got here. It is an urban landscape and there are people about. I walk past a large lit-up area. I start wondering where I am, then I think this area I have just passed may have been a railway station and I should go back and see if I can read the name of it, then I might be able to use my phone to find accommodation. I go back and find it is a deserted petrol station. I walk on. I realise that it is getting dark and that I had better stay the night here, although I do not appear to have walked far, am not tired and might therefore find it difficult to sleep.
I come to a line of shops and decide to go in one and ask where I can find a hostel. It is like an old-fashioned general store, all muddle and confusion with stuff hanging everywhere so it is difficult to see where the counter is. A young dark-haired woman appears and there is a man somewhere in the background. She is on my left as I look at her and he is on my right. He has fair hair. I realise I have left home without the Spanish dictionary/phrase book I ordered and that in fact it has not had time to arrive. The only Spanish word I can recall is 'hablo' - I talk. I want to say 'I don't speak Spanish'. I don't know the word for 'not'. I start to 'babble'- saying 'hablo' several times. In the end I think they may understand other languages so I say 'Hablo kein Spanish'. The man says, 'That is all right, you can speak English.'
Greatly relieved, I ask if there is a hostel, Pilgrim Hostel, I correct myself, where I can stay the night? The young woman says yes, takes me to the door and points across the street then gives me some directions. I find the hostel which is a long, low pre-fab-like building, well lit with people queuing at the door. I remember that I have my Pilgrim passport in my bag but then realise that it is stamped to begin at St Jean Pied de Port on May 1st and that it is still April 29th. I wonder if they will allow me stay as my 'pilgrimage' does not officially begin until the 1st.
The dream ends.
